Waist beads have been a cultural tradition in African countries since the beginning of time. Many believed it began in Egypt, where they are called “Girdles,” others from the Hausa tribe in Ghana refers to it as “Jigida.” In early times, they served spiritual and celebratory purposes. The more overelaborate, colorful, and sophisticated in design the waist beads, the higher the social status of the wearer. These beads were the “belts” of the ancient world and a symbol of female sexuality, womanhood, power, femininity, and spirituality, among other meanings. Also known as waist bracelets, waist chains, or belly beads, these ornaments can convey significant meaning as a sign of status, mood, or mating signals. They have also used as currency for trading.
